Paul Boardman
TOP STAND-UP TO LAUNCH STONE’S FIRST COMEDY CLUB.

Top stand-up comedian and SkySports presenter, Paul Boardman is to launch a new comedy club in Stone.
As part of their 25th Anniversary celebrations, popular Stone entertainment venue, Granville’s, stages its first Comedy Club on
Wednesday 22 April (8.30pm).

Paul Boardman is familiar to many as a regular presenter on SkySports where he also hosts the Saturday night football highlight’s programme ‘Football First’. In addition to which, he has established himself as one of the country’s most popular stand-up comedians regularly appearing at top venues such as London’s ‘Comedy Store’ and ‘Jongleurs’.

A former professional footballer with Plymouth Argyle, Boardman scored on his League debut, but after two and a half years with Argyle his career ended prematurely due to injury. He joined SkySports as a presenter in 2001, a career he has since combined with stand-up, a not unnatural venture as Paul is the son of top Liverpool comedian, Stan Boardman.

Stone-based writer and stand-up, Les Scott, is to host the Comedy Club which is also have an ‘open-mike’ for budding comics try their material before a live audience.

The plan is for the Comedy Night to become a regular monthly event at Granville’s, said owner, Adam Jones, ‘In the past we have had the likes of George Melly and Humphrey Lyttleton at Granville’s, though better known for their music, the comedy element in their respective acts proved immensely popular with audiences.

‘There is no established comedy venue in North Staffs. By bringing top stand-ups to Granville’s and affording local comics an opportunity to perform, we’re hoping the Comedy Club will really take-off.’

Advance Tickets (priced £8.50) for the first Comedy Club featuring Paul Boardman are available from Granville’s (01785 816658).

The origins of the name of the town of Stone go back a long way to the 7th Century when King Wulfhere of Mercia slew his two sons for becoming Christians. Led by his wife Queen Erminhilda people put down stones where they lay. Eventually sorry for what he had done the King founded a priory over his sons grave and a town grew up around it!
